Leadwork Awards 2002
The 2002 Awards presented the Judges with a dilemma as they looked to select winners from the record number of entries received.
- Residential
This is not your average domestic dwelling but it is a domestic dwelling. All be it costing in excess of £14m.
On this project, the contractor had the responsibility to redesign the roof in order that the leadwork complied with the current LSA recommendations, including Bay sizes, clipping detail, bossing, lead welding and fixing that are critical for the expected longevity of lead sheet.
Although difficult to see in this photo, there is provision for ventilation where flashing is turned into the stonework. This provides adequate ventilation below the timber substrate to avoid condensation problems.
A general shot of the roof layout. In particular note the ridge detail where short pieces are used with lead welded cappings over the rolls, thereby avoiding excessive bossing, maintaining the lead thickness with no thinning.
It was also necessary because the roof was raised so high from the original to create a landing space in order for the door access for the roof to be catered for.
I am sure that everyone would agree that this is an excellent example of leadwork.
The winner of the Domestic & Residential Category is Exe Valley Services for Melbury House - Dorchester.
- Commercial
This refurbishment of this old redundant factory has seen the use of relatively new techniques where pre-formed, lead covered, timber panels have been hung onto a system of bars which are secured to the original building.
This provides a maintenance-free wall surface that will require no attention in the future.
Note the recessed joints between the panels which have to be carefully lined up to show this thoughtfully designed appearance.
Patination Oil has been applied which will allow the surface to weather to the expected lead finish.
Some of these prestigious apartments will cost in excess of £1 million, and Robert de Nero is an early tenant.
The winner of the Commercial & Public Buildings Category is former winners of the Calder Leadwork Awards and the LCA Murdock award, N.D.M for the Old Hartley Jan Factory, Bermondsey, London. Their quality of work continues to be award-winning.
- Religious and Academic
The lead roof which is shaped in all directions, required particular skill that is to be expected of a member of the LCA.
All the detail conforms to the LSA requirements, and note the ventilation detail with the exhaust exit near the ridge, and the inlet is at gutter level.
The precision of the clip detail at the ridge is critical when the building, near Dartford, is subject to high winds.
The winner of the Religious and Academic Buildings category is Full Metal Jacket Limited for Ingress Abbey, Greenhithe, Kent.
- Special
Entered as ornamental, but it is the pool that is ornamental, not the leadwork. However, the skill required to produce this lining for the pool, which is at National Trust Cragside Estate Gardens in Northumberland, deserves a special award.
The judges were very impressed with the bossing and the lead welding skill required to fabricate and fix the lead sections, as seen in these photographs. I am sure that all lead-workers will agree that this special award is well deserved.
This special award goes to C Carruthers for the Cragside Estate, Northumberland.
- Ornamental
It is difficult to describe briefly the detail that has been carried out on this project. This really is an example of 'a picture paints a thousand words'.
For a job that will not be seen in detail from the ground, the car and finish of the leadwork is a delight..
The skill overall is first-rate, and the contractor is also a LCA member, and a former winner of the Calder Leadwork Awards.
The winner of the ornamental category is Vince Mckee Plumbing for St Peter and Paul's Church , Yalding, Kent.
- Overall Winner
A difficult task for all the judges is to decide that if only one subject could go forward, which would it be?
After careful consideration and much discussion, it was agreed that the only one subject would be MELBURY HOUSE
