Leadwork Awards 2004
The 7th Calder Leadwork Awards, once again were difficult to judge as a number of category entries were worthy of winning.
- Domestic
The Rotunda is a small part of a large leadwork contract that has been carried out to a very high standard. The semi-circular rotunda in particular requires considerable detailing skills. In addition the visual effects compliments surrounding architectural features. This leadwork is another exceptional example of leadwork skills that will be admired well into the next century.

- Commercial
The architects at Maidenhead decided that cladding the stonework in lead sheet would be the best way of providing long-term, maintenance-free protection to the stone tablets that are engraved with thousands of names of missing soldiers.
This contract for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission required a very high standard of leadwork skills. The problems caused by the variations in the stonework made pre-fabrication difficult and the maintaining of parallel lines in the 50mm code 5 drip edges to be the most demanding.
The standard of this project is an example of excellent leadwork skills that will be admired for the rest of this century and beyond.

The winner of the commercial & public buildings category is Marshott Non-Ferrous Roofing Ltd. Marshott are a member of the Lead Contractors Association and carries an Excellent vetting grade category.
- Religious and Academic
This project took 6 months to complete and required the removal of lead fixed 130 years ago. A complete redesign of the roof was necessary to ensure that the latest recommendations of the lead sheet manuals were followed. The lead was laid on a building paper underlay using timber roll at 60mm centres.
Each bay head fixed with a triple row of stainless steel nails at 50mm centres. The roof also required 26 bird beak roof vents hand made on site to bespoke measurements and fitted to alternate bays at ridge level on both slopes together with ventilation details at the eves. The judges considered this entry to be faultless in design and application. The standard of work will be admired in another 130 years time by future craftsmen.

- Ornamental
An example of complex and decorative leadwork.
The Lead Sheet Association recommended methods of installation have been carried out to an exceptionally high standard.
This leadwork detail will be in evidence well into the next century illustrating the leadworkers dedication and skills to produce a project that everyone involved can be proud of.
The winner of the ornamental leadwork for buildings is Matheson Plumbing Company Limited. Mathesons are a member of the Lead Contractors Association and carries an Excellent vetting grade category
- Overall Winner
The judges in their assessment of the finalists were delighted that the standard seemed to be getting better every year and it was becoming increasingly hard to separate the best entries. The St Mary's project was considered to be faultless in design and a worthy overall winner for the Calder Leadwork Awards 2004.
The judges commented that the winning categories selected from a wide range of entrants were all members of the Lead Contractors Association.
The judges would recommend to all competent leadworkers, who are proud of the work that they do, that they should consider membership of this specialist association.
