Bedford Hospital, Bedford

Bedford Hospital has been providing healthcare services to people living in and around Bedford for over 200 years.  In late 2011, approval was granted for the installation of a second CT Scanner to meet increasing demand for appointments & improve patient experience.  The GE Optima 16 slice unit was installed in an existing room which required additional radiation shielding to house the new machine.

5 tonnes of lead shielding was installed on the walls and ceiling.  Calder also supplied and fitted a 2100mm x 1100mm RD50 lead glass observation window.

The CT scanner proved to be a challenging project with enormous constraints on what we could do and when we could do them. Calder delivered their materials on time and carried out their works on program and it was good to see regular site visits to check on progress.

Russell McLean, Contracts Manager

Duration

In order to cause minimal disruption to patients, the installation was completed ahead of schedule in just 12 days.

Constraints

Fixing boards to the ceiling posed some difficulties. Calder worked closely with the projects’ Structural Engineer to devise a safe and workable solution

Project Controllers

The Bedford Hospital Trust appointed Murphy Philipps Architects Ltd to work closely with the building contractor Neville Special Projects Ltd to successfully deliver the project.
