Calder Industrial Materials, Chester has invested in another CNC machining centre to support its Special Products operation. The addition of a new Haas VF-8/40 CNC milling machine adds to the already impressive 9 machine tools the company already has in operation.

Maurice Bailey the Managing Director said: “we have experienced an unprecedented growth in machining work in this business over the past 12 months. We have therefore taken the decision to not only invest in new equipment but to go for a physically much larger machine tool to accommodate the type of work we are now winning. This will add greatly to our capabilities and satisfy customer demand.

We have also created a new management structure with a dedicated cell Production Manger to ensure the smooth running of this important manufacturing operation.”

Following Calder’s recent successes shielding radiotherapy bunkers at Mount Vernon, St Thomas’ and The Royal Marsden Hospitals, as well as a PET/CT suite also at The Royal Marsden, we are pleased to announce Matt Smith has been appointed as our Sales Representative for the UK Healthcare sector.

Matt has an excellent knowledge and understanding of this very specialist field having spent the previous eight years with Wardray Premise who specialise in hospital radiation shielding.

On joining Calder Matt commented “I’m very excited at the prospect of working for Calder and developing and growing their Healthcare business, particularly their lead on plasterboard and lead on plywood installations.

Calder’s Managing Director Maurice Bailey added “in the current economic climate it makes a pleasant change for a UK manufacturing company to be recruiting rather than laying off and shows the strength of our business and our faith in Matt to grow our healthcare sales further. Matt is a welcomed addition to the team and I’m sure we’ll soon reap the benefits of his expertise”.

Calder Industrial Materials Ltd Managing Director Maurice Bailey was one of 100 specially invited guests attending the 13th October Keel Laying Ceremony for the fifth hunter-killer Astute class submarine “Anson” at BAE Systems in Barrow-In-Furness. Guest of honour was the Minister for International Security Strategy, Gerald Howarth MP.

BAE Systems is the lead contractor for the Astute Class submarine programme for the UK Royal Navy, and Calder Industrial Materials is a major components supplier to the Barrow based company.

About the day Maurice commented “The keel laying is the first major milestone for any shipbuilding project. It is the maritime equivalent of setting the foundations of a building and is a very significant part of the process of building a nuclear submarine. I was very honoured to be invited by BAE Systems to attend on behalf of Calder Industrial Materials Ltd, and I believe it reflects the close working relationship we have established over the years with this major UK Defence contractor. Whilst I represented Calder at the ceremony, this is an endorsement of the excellent work of the whole Calder team in delivering quality technical products to an extremely demanding delivery schedule”.

As a world leader in the diagnosis and treatment of cancers, London’s Royal Marsden Hospital invests heavily in the latest technologies to diagnose and help patients fight the disease.

Early in 2011 the hospital began the project to improve its PET CT Scanner facilities within the hospital. Due to the success of the previous installation by Calder on a Cyberknife® lead bunker in August 2010, Cuffe PLC, the appointed contractor for the job, contacted Calder for their input on the design of six new shielded rooms.

The installation required lead shielding for six rooms in the hospital. Two rooms to house a SPECT Scanner, a PET Scanner and four labs – an isotope lab, PET uptake lab and a nuclear medicine injection room.

Calder was instrumental in the design of the shielding. Working closely with Cuffe PLC and the RPA on the project, Calder’s unique chevron rail system was the perfect solution to shield the rooms. The chevrons were able to provide the necessary protection and were versatile enough to allow work within the existing structure of the rooms. The project required multiple room installation on the top floor which required careful planning for access and transportation of 30 tonnes of lead.

The 30 tonnes of interlocking chevron “bricks” ranging from 10mm to 17mm thick, lined the existing concrete and newly built partition walls, while Calder’s experienced installation team made sure that their configuration eliminated potential shine paths.

Additional shielding installed in an existing corrugated roof required an innovative design solution from Calder’s engineers. In addition to this, on an on-going basis throughout the install, the design team worked closely with the project’s RPA to design shielding around RSJ’s and other obstructions.

Finally, 5 sets of shielded doors (4 internal and 1 external) and 2 windows will be installed to complete the installation.

Installation has now begun on site with completion set for end of September 2011.

Another challenging and successful design and install from Calder Industrial Materials.

Calder Industrial Materials Ltd, based in the UK, has recently launched a new e-commerce website showcasing their range of lead products for sash windows.
The site offers a range of make weights, hooks, eyelets, square and round sash bar weights all designed, manufactured and supplied from their Chester Factory.

Lead weights are traditionally used in counterbalanced sash windows and Calder sash bars and sash weights are a superior addition to new or refurbished sash windows. Calder produces hundreds of tonnes of lead window sash bar and weights every year and offer a range of styles, sizes and weights.

Maurice Bailey, Managing Director comments “Since the site’s launch last year we have had a great deal of interest and sales are steadily increasing despite the effects of the current economic climate on the building and refurbishment industries. Our lead times are low and because there is no middle man we offer extremely competitive prices. We manufacture and deliver a premium product directly to the customer.” Calder supply sash weights to the trade and DIY enthusiasts, window manufacturers and hardware retailers.

Sash bars are offered in both round and square sections of 25, 32, 38, 45 and 50mm or their imperial equivalents. Sash weights are 50mm in diameter and available from 227g to 13.15kg in 227g increments.

With a fast turnaround of around 3 working days delivered straight to the home or workplace, Calder offer a solution to any building or refurbishment requirements.

During 2010, Pacific Nuclear Systems Inc, an American Based Specialist nuclear company who have a broad portfolio of products and client base in the global nuclear industry, were looking for a partner in Europe to service their general shielding requirements and in particular for their Tru-shield® drums. Following a search and evaluation of market suppliers, they came to Calder Industrial Materials’ Chester Facility. John Ritchie, Pacific Nuclear Systems Inc.’s Director said, “We consider ourselves fortunate to have found Calder, as we believe their demonstrated capacity and capability at the Chester facility coupled with their dominant market position as Europe’s largest Pb Recycler, give us a Pan-European platform to not only service our key customers in the UK, but Asia and the Americas as well”.

In July 2010, the two companies signed a partnering agreement for the Tru-shield® drums. Since then the two companies have worked on other projects such as the innovative lead shielded blankets and the Provenance Recycling® Lead Bank. The partnership continues to grow from strength-to-strength with new products and markets being developed. Maurice Bailey, Managing Director of Calder Industrial Materials added “It is always a pleasure to work with Specialist companies such as Pacific Nuclear Systems Inc. Both John Ritchie and Robert Ward, their Director of Operations are clearly experts in their field. I believe that the 250 years of knowledge that Calder Industrial Materials brings to this partnership coupled to the technical expertise of our management team enabled us to win this opportunity. I see thepartnership as being a great opportunity for both companies to increase market penetration for what is a fantastic product.”

Should you wish to know more about the products and services offered by the partnership please see the link to the Pacific Nuclear Website (www.pdsgrp.com) or visit the Tru-Shield® Drums Section, Blankets Section and Lead Bank Recycling Section of our website .

Calder has been awarded the contract to supply components to the MOD via a UK based blue chip organisation after a long qualification process during which our products were tested against world wide competition,

During the difficult and challenging process, Calder was praised for its flexibility and willingness to do what was necessary to achieve the stringent performance criteria of the MOD. A unique skill set and over 250 years of lead expertise, combined with the performance of Calder’s sample product and “can do” attitude, ensured our eventual victory.

Production will begin in August and will utilise £500k of specialised machinery purchased to accommodate this project and others like it in the future.
