Fixed Lead Screens

Used primarily in x-ray departments, Calders’ fixed lead screens are custom made to meet the client’s specifications regarding size, viewing requirements and finish.

Framed in durable satin anodised aluminium, the screen comprises of a lead sheet core ranging in thickness between 1mm and 3.5mm depending upon the amount of shielding required. This is then sandwiched in a robust solid sheet material and finished in a plastic laminate. Lead glass vision panels are incorporated within the screen to enable the x-ray clinician to clearly observe the patient during the procedure.

Calders’ bespoke lead screens are manufactured to comply with MEIGaN version 2 (Medical Electrical Installation Guidance) issued by MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency)

 

Lead Lined Rooms

Due to its excellent shielding properties lead is often used to shield specific rooms in the healthcare industry. Lead lined rooms are necessary in radiotherapy and radiology departments to protect staff and patients from the effects of radiation.

Why Lead Lining?

Lead has a higher density than concrete and steel and therefore is ideal where space is at a premium. For 1 unit thickness of lead lining the equivalent is approximately 2.5 units of thickness of steel and 6 units of thickness of concrete to achieve the same levels of radiation protection. Also, unlike steel and concrete shielding, lead lined rooms can be quickly and cleanly assembled and easily decommissioned, and maintain a high residual resale value .

It can be bonded to plasterboard or plywood depending on weight and then attached to shielded batons on the walls of rooms where lower radiation levels are involved such as dental surgeries, x-ray suites and CT scanner rooms. These types of rooms usually incorporate lead lined doors and lead glass observation windows.

Lead Radiation Shielding

For PET/CT, iodine rooms, brachytherapy and stereotactic radiosurgery bunkers thicker lead is required for shielding. This is achieved by installing chevron rails to the walls, ceilings and in some cases the floors of the room where the procedure will take place. Calder Industrial Materials’ modular chevron lead rail system is available in plate thicknesses ranging from 10mm to 75mm and can be supplied in lengths up to 1metre long. Greater thickness can be achieved by layering or stacking the rail. The rails are mechanically fastened to the wall of the bunker and all penetrations are covered to ensure 100% integrity of the lead lined room and effectiveness of the shield.

Using our chevron rail system Calder Industrial Materials have shielded CyberKnife® and Tomotherapy® bunkers and PET/CT suites. We have also shielded CT scanner and x-ray rooms with our lead on plasterboard / lead on plywood solutions, and consider ourselves the leading experts in radiation shielding using lead.

 

 

Containers Lead Lined

For on-site storage and transport of high radiation dose rate material

In early 2011, Calder Industrial Materials Ltd and Pacific Nuclear Systems Inc signed a teaming agreement to shield / lead line the Tru-shield range of lead lined containers. This is an approved and certified IAEA TS-R 1 vented lead lined container that are ideal for radioactive storage and transport. Designed by PNSI and manufactured in the UK, these containers are in the forefront of cutting edge design and safety

They are available in a variety of materials

Cold Forging

Calder possesses a range of cold forging machines capable of pressing small lead radiation shielded pots or other similar components that require a high integrity of radiation shielding.  Smaller thin walled components cannot offer the level of protection if they are merely cast, cold forging removes any possibility of radiation leakage.  Our pots are in demand from high specification users such as the nuclear industry and nuclear medical oncology.

High Speed Cold Forging Of Lead Components

Calder has recently installed some super fast lead cold forging equipment for the manufacture of lead components. Wire from our extrusion presses is fed into the machines and we can then make complex parts at the rate of up to 400 components per minute.

Lead Strip

Calder manufactures lead strips which come have a number of uses. Our specialise lead window strips have a continuous strip caster and foil and are available in a range of thicknesses between 0.25 mm & 10 mm, widths of 20 mm to 70 mm and variable lengths up to a maximum coil weight of approximately 500kgs. Typical uses are for the production of faux window lead which can be glued onto windows.

Lead Bank Recycling

Calder Industrial materials and PNSI (Pacific Nuclear Systems Inc.) have jointly set up a provenance recycle lead bank located in Chester in the north west of the UK.  Pacific Nuclear & Calder Industrial Materials Ltd. came together and developed a UK based central facility for the dedicated receipt and management of Pb originating in the nuclear cycle to return to the nuclear cycle for the benefit of UK Nuclear industry. Currently the bank can handle free release material.

  • Briefly stated, the concept of Provenance recycle® is to take pre-treated Pb directly, melt the Pb, manufacture into shielding
  • Products for use in the nuclear industry including but not limited to prefabricated containers for re use only in the Nuclear Industry
  • The objective is to minimise handling and/or decontamination of any Pb prior to fabrication into suitable products

Caldervent ridge and hip system

Coded welding teams fully qualified in MIG, TIG and conventional stick welding, ensure the integrity of each structural steel or sheet metal fabrication. Our steel welders are complemented by the largest team of lead welders (lead burners) in the UK and possibly in Europe. Hot Cells for PET

Our hot cells provide a shielded environment for the storage and handling of radioactive isotopes such as fluorine-18 or carbon-11 used in Positron Emission Tomography. Typically, lead shielding of 50mm, 75mm or 100mm is used to protect workers from radiation exposure hazards. However, Calder can manufacture shielding thickness and internal dimensions tailored to meet the specific needs of your production or research facilities.

Lead Bricks

We work with some of the biggest research and development departments in Europe and provide a range of lead bricks which are suitable for shielded rooms, walls, chambers or cells can be constructed quickly and economically using our interlocking lead bricks. Each individual brick is between 50mm and 150mm long and is designed to lock into the lead bricks surrounding it. The unique design of the bricks enables them to be layered in order to achieve the thickness of shielding required by the research being undertaken.

Our high quality cold formed lead bricks weigh between 2.8kg and 17kg dependent upon their size and function. This relatively light weight facilitates fabrication in confined spaces.

It’s believed that Calder are the last remaining producer of cold formed lead bricks in Europe.

Low Background Detection Shield

Calder free-standing lead shields provide an enclosed low radioactivity background environment for Germanium Detector Measuring Systems. Our lead shielding products are available in an extensive range of configurations to suit a broad spectrum of measurement systems.

Each individual section of lead shielding is demountable and sized so that it can lifted by hand. All of the shields exposed lead surfaces are clad in steel or painted. Steel support frames and cladding are finished with hard wearing enamel paint.

Lead Lined Safes

We provide a range of lead lined safes that are designed for the storage of radioactive materials. Each of our free standing safes have a mild steel outer case lined with either 12mm, 25mm or 50mm thick lead depending upon the protection necessary. The interior can be finished in stainless steel and include a lead lined draw if required. Available in three sizes, all our safes feature a lockable, full width, lead lined door, hung on heavy duty hinges.

Hand Held Lead Pots

Calder manufacture two different types of hand held lead pots which are suitable shields for the manual transportation of bottles containing radioactive compounds.

The Type A is a plain lead pot with a plastic handle and permanently attached self closing lid. Our Type B pot consists of a painted 3mm wall thickness mild steel, lead lined shell, with a toggle fastening hinged lid. The Type B has a detachable handled and can be supplied with a lockable toggle fastener if required.

L-Shields

Our bench or trolley mounted “L” shaped shields provide radiation shielding for workers handling small volumes of radioactive material.

Protective lead is built into their horizontal base and vertical “body” shield while the angled 250mm x 200mm lead glass viewing window provides protection equivalent to 6mm of lead at 140Kv (5.2 gm/cc). These melamine finished, easy to move shields are used in research, medical, industrial and scientific facilities across the globe.

Calder “L” shields can be adapted for specific applications; side shields, stainless steel trays and additional shielding can be specified if necessary.

Pipe Shielding

Our lead moulding and extrusion facilities enable us to manufacture bespoke lead shielding for pipework within research facilities. Each segment of pipe shielding has specially profiled mating faces to prevent shine paths forming in either direction. Once joined together on site, the segments produce a complete radiation barrier around active pipe runs.

We manufacture all the high quality lead used to create radiation shielding for both optics and experimental hutches, guaranteeing their safety and integrity. Every Calder hutch is bespoke, tailored to meet the shielding requirements of the application it is built for.

Industrial X-Ray – NDT Rooms, Enclosures & NDT Cabinets

Industrial x-ray and CT scanning (up to 450kV) are used as a means of non-destructive testing for inspection and metrology. They offer a quick and highly detailed analysis of internal components and assembly features and are used extensively by the aerospace and scientific communities to guarantee the quality of safety critical components.

Working closely with OEMs, we offer design, manufacture and installation of steel framed lead lined X-ray cabinets and X-ray enclosures.

NDT Rooms and Enclosures

A NDT enclosure is usually a room larger than 2.5m cubed that persons would enter to carry out a radiographic task. This is ideal where large or very heavy objects need to be inspected using x-ray or gamma radiography.

The room can be fitted with lifting equipment such as a crane or hoist. Some rooms are big enough to accommodate entry by either a fork lift truck or a bogie. The opening to the room is often shielded using a lead lined steel motorised door featuring interlocks and safety features.

Depending on the energy of the x-ray inspection equipment being used for NDT the room will be constructed from either lead-steel or lead-plywood panels mounted on a prefabricated and free standing steel frame. This type of structure is quick and easy to assemble and dismantle.

Calder offer a complete turnkey design, manufacture, installation and commissioning service to meet each customer’ specific NDT requirements.

NDT Cabinets

A NDT cabinet is usually smaller that 2.5m cube where small items are loaded manually or by a robot for inspection. The lead lined cabinet contains a source and detector in either a vertical or horizontal orientation, with a manipulator used to position the item to be inspected between them.

Manual or automatic access doors with interlocks, safety features and in some instances, a viewing window can be incorporated in the design, along with cable ducts and removable service panels.

All sheet metal components used to clad our fabricated steel framed lead shield are manufactured in house on our CNC laser cutter and brake press, enabling Calder to offer a complete turnkey design, manufacture, installation and commissioning service to meet each customer’ specific NDT requirements.

Lead Wool

Calder’s in-house manufacturing facility produces lead wool on our Chester site using our unique process. Each piece of high quality lead wool consists of thin strands of lead and is primarily used as caulking to seal joints between lead and steel fittings. Supplied in a range of lead alloy specifications from 0-0.5% antimony to Chemical A, the specification of lead wool is dependent on application. Chemical – Tank/Vessel Lead Lining

Lead is used in a variety of applications across the Chemical and Refining industries. These include;-

Lead lined tanks for chrome plating, anodising or pickling tanks, along with anodes for copper winning, copper foil production, chrome plating and anodising.

Transport vessels for hazardous chemicals such as phosphoric acids and bromides can be lead lined to provide a long lasting chemical resistant coating.

Repair and maintenance on existing equipment, such as Wet Electrostatic Precipitators, cooling or heating coils etc.

We have the skills to supply these vessels from design through to steelwork, lead lining and installation.

Lead Anodes

Our long established range of lead anodes includes function specific alloys based on elements such as calcium, tin and antimony. Dependent upon their composition and use we will cast, roll or extrude the lead alloy to provide the highest level of anode performance possible. Any welding required during manufacture is performed in our proven in-house lead welding facility.

Our lead anodes are used for copper foil production, copper and zinc winning, pickling plant, chrome plating and many other finishing applications.

Lead Ballast

Calder’s lead ballast is used in ship and boat building. We can produce lead ballast weights ranging from less than a gram to 80 tonnes. Our PVC coated lead ballast blocks are manufactured in line with the requirements of DEF STAN 02-168 issue 2.

Lead Shot

Our lead shot is manufactured using a state of the art automated facility and machine graded to guarantee consistency of size and quality. Calder fine grade lead shot is used by many major industries; it can be  blended with epoxy resin and used as ballast by boat builders or other industries, mixed into concrete or used on its own to provide radiation shielding and used in the manufacture of free machining steel throughout the world.

Lead Batteries

Over 70% of the worlds processed lead is used in lead acid batteries. We manufacture lead batteries, posts and bushings for use in standby power equipment and complex terminals for small electric vehicles.

Our high quality hand casting techniques enable us to create a non-porous post with a bonded insert. These posts are cast using non-organic lubricants which will not degrade the seal between post and lid. Our casting techniques ensure that we have no join lines which could allow tracking and that we have no heat build up due to porosity.

We provide lead filling and lead lining to the defence industry for steel fabrications that are required to hold radioactive materials.The two methods of lead filling we provide are hot lead filling and cold lead lining. The two different methods depend on the types of fabrications and circumstances that they are required. Hot filling involves us casting molten lead directly into the fabrication under carefully controlled conditions in order to avoid shrinkage cavities. Lead Bricks / Chevron Rail

Our two shielding systems use individual bricks of 50mm or 100mm thickness, which are designed to lock into the lead bricks surrounding it. The unique design of the bricks enables them to be layered in order to achieve precisely the thickness of shielding required by the vessel.

Our high quality cold formed lead bricks weigh between 2.8kg and 17kg dependent upon their size and function. This relatively light weight facilitates fabrication in confined spaces.

 

Due to our bricks being cold forged and therefore accurate and precisely to size, the resulting wall can be built level and true very quickly.  Cast bricks can be notoriously difficult to align making their use more expensive due to a higher labour content.

It’s believed that Calder are the last remaining producer of cold formed lead bricks in Europe.

Lead Shot

Calder’s lead shot is manufactured using a state of the art automated shot spinning plant and then machine graded to guarantee consistency of size and quality.

In addition to its consumer applications our fine grade lead shot has many commercial uses; it is blended with epoxy resin and used as lead ballast, mixed into concrete to provide radiation shielding and used in the manufacture of free machining steel.

Our lead shot is available from 0.4mm to 7.0mm in diameter (see table below for full details of our standard range). Alternative sizes can be manufactured if required, please

Sash Bar & Weights

Calder sash bar and sash weights are a superior addition to new or refurbished sash windows.

Sash bars are offered in both round and square sections of 25, 32, 38, 45 and 50mm. Each 600mm or 1200mm long bar has a 10mm diameter central hole throughout its length and can easily be cut to a desired size/weight using a course bladed wood saw.

Sash weights are 50mm in diameter and available from 227g to 13.15kg in 227g increments. Each weight has chamfered ends to avoid snagging and is supplied with a hook securely anchored in a 10mm diameter central hole.

Glove Boxes

Glove boxes are a stainless steel sealed containers that are used to manipulate radioactive materials by means of gloves built into the sides of the glove box. Lead radiation shielding and a lead glass viewing window are incorporated into the unit to protect the operator from gamma radiation.

Lead Blankets

Calder have joined forces with Pacific Nuclear Systems Inc. to develop a range of shielded lead blankets for the nuclear and x –ray shielding markets.

Our heavy-duty, flexible, non-flammable and easy to decontaminate lead blankets provide lead shielding against gamma radiation produced in a nuclear environment. The lead blankets can be also be hung, laid down on the ground or wrapped around radioactive pipes or valves.

Conventional lead blankets use lead wool to provide shielding, however our lead blankets are manufactured to a unique methodology that offers the same flexibility as conventional lead wool blankets but also guarantees complete shielding properties with the elimination of gaps and voids present in the porous lead wool.

Lead Blankets

Calder produces a range of products for the healthcare market which are designed to assist in radiation shielding. Our heavy duty, non-flammable and easy to decontaminate lead blankets provides shielding against gamma radiation associated with nuclear medicine. These multi-purpose lead blankets can be used vertically or horizontally and can even be wrapped around sensitive equipment or plant. Many lead blankets use lead wool which can open up or migrate, leaving voids in the shielding.

Calders lead blankets are produced using lead sheet which is designed for added safety and manufactured to BS EN 12588 standards. This sheet is sealed inside a durable plastic envelope and this method of construction produces a flexible blanket yet eliminates the potential for voids.

Lead Lined Doors

Calder Industrial Materials Ltd make and supply a range of powered radiation shielded lead lined doors specifically for hospital oncology, PET/CT suites or linac bunker applications.  Our range of lead lined doors can be hinged, sliding or automatic and are custom made to meet the safety and functionality requirements of x-ray suites, cath labs, gamma camera, angiography, fluoroscopy and CT scanner rooms.

The integrity of any lead lined room or bunker will be compromised unless its entry points are suitably robust.   As no two jobs are alike, we work closely with our clients to design a bespoke door system to their requirements, which is then manufactured and fully installed by our expert and experienced technicians.

Our lead lined doors can be powered either electrically or pneumatically.  The lead thickness and decorative finish of the doors are specifically tailored to your needs. If required we can also incorporate lead glass viewing windows or panels. All our lead lined doors can be supplied complete with shielded frames and architraves for guaranteed protection against radiation leakage or penetration. Doors can also be supplied in a range of finishes to suit your building scheme.  We can design remotely using either your existing building or aperture drawings in Auto-cad or 3D Solid Works or arrange for a personal consultation with one of our designers.

Lead Chevrons

The high energy x-rays used in radiotherapy and oncology demand heavy duty lead shielding. Our lead chevrons interlink to form complete bunkers suitable for use with linear accelerator treatment, proton therapy, PET/CT facilities and brachytherapy suites. Each individual lead chevron locks into its adjacent lead chevrons to form a radiation shield wall or ceiling of almost any shape.

The lead thicknesses range from 10mm to 50mm in lengths between 450mm and 900mm long and are 100mm high. The maximum weight per chevron is 26kg for ease of installation.

Where very high energy shielding is required the chevrons can be layered to any required thickness and due to its unique design offers total radiation shielding.

This versatile shielding solution can also be used for industrial x-ray and general nuclear shielding applications.

Plasterboard and Plywood – lead bonding

Plasterboard or plywood lead bonding is primarily used to shield lower energy x-rays used in radiology, where greater strength and support is required such as to dry line x-ray suites, cath labs, fluoroscopy, angiography, gamma camera and CT scanner rooms. The sheet lead is manufactured to BSEN 12588 and the thicknesses available range from standard code 3 (1.32mm) through to code 7 (3.15mm). Custom thicknesses can be supplied on request.  Lead tape is used to shield the joints.

Calderflex primer

Some porous surfaces such as concrete or asbestos sheet may need to be primed before applying Calderflex High Build waterproofing. Our one coat solvent based Calderflex primer adheres to porous roof surfaces and dries quickly to form the perfect key for Calderflex High Build.

Calderflex coating

This high performance, ready to use, solvent based acrylic liquid provides long term waterproofing in a single application. Our special fibres mixed into the solution interlace to cover small cracks and form a durable impermeable finish. Calderflex can be applied even in damp conditions and has a longer life expectancy than bituminous roof coatings

  • Standard Calderflex is grey. Black and solar reflective white can be supplied to order.
  • Standard Calderflex tins are 5kg. Tins of 2.5kg and 20kg drums can be supplied to order.

Our GRC (Glassfibre Reinforced Concrete) ridges simulate the look of natural clay but achieve the consistent level ridge line only possible with precision cast concrete. Gutter Expansion Joints

Sometimes the design of a roof means a traditional lead lined gutter is not practical because the necessary drip provision cannot be accommodated. The Calder gutter expansion joint overcomes this problem. Its two lead strips are connected by a high performance, double sided and vulcanized, EPDM synthetic rubber band. Flexislates

A Flexislate offers high performance pipe shielding made from a combination of a durable Code 4 lead base and a bonded EPDM synthetic rubber sleeve. Each flexislate has a 450mm x 450mm base and will form a weather tight seal around pipes, aerials and similar items that penetrate tile, slate or built-up felt roofs.

Lead Fabrication

Calder have extensive fabrication skills in lead and mild steel products for demanding markets including defence, nuclear, medical and industrial x-ray sectors. A new stainless steel fabrication facility will shortly be commissioned to extend our expertise and range even further.

From a one-off to production batch runs, our large scale facilities mean that fabrications up to 5m x 5m x 10m and weighing up to 10 tonnes can be easily accommodated.

Coded welding teams fully qualified in MIG, TIG and conventional stick welding, ensure the integrity of each structural steel or sheet metal fabrication. Our steel welders are complemented by the largest team of lead welders (lead burners) in the UK and possibly in Europe. Uniquely, these two areas of expertise enable us to combine complex lead fabrications with steel structures in one manufacturing facility, producing unrivalled bespoke radiation or x-ray shielded enclosures.

Lead Burning Kit

Lead Tools

Lead is one of the softest metals and does not harden significantly when worked at normal ambient temperatures. Lead can therefore be shaped, or bossed, without the application of heat, by a skilled worker using simple hand tools. Our extensive range of wooden and plastic lead tools includes:

  • Flat Dresser: dresses lead sheet flat when setting out and fitting lead in position.
  • Bossing Stick: the primary tool used for shaping lead sheet.
  • Bending Stick: favoured by lead workers for detailed bossing.
  • Bossing Mallet: used with various sticks when extra force is needed.
  • Setting-in Stick:  sets in fold lines, may be used to finish fitted lead work.
  • Chase Wedge: used to finish lead work in position and for setting in.

Building Papers

Building paper is intended for use on smooth substrates including plywood, providing that its underside is ventilated. It is also a suitable for natural stone surfaces. When used on smooth concrete or screed finishes it will prevent the free alkali released by drying cement attacking the lead sheeting. All of Calder’s Building papers conform to BS1521 Class A.

Geotec Underlays

Our Geotec 220PY underlay is particularly suited to use on existing traditional timber board substrates. Its special composition prevents ridges and fractures forming in the lead sheet where thermal movement causes it to pass over the edges of individual boards. Weighing only 220g/m2 this non-woven, needle punched, polyester textile underlay conforms to the requirements of the Lead Sheet Association.

Underlays

Underlays are used to isolate lead sheet from its substrate. They allow expansion and contraction with changes in temperature by reducing drag between the two materials. An effective underlay will also support the lead sheet and level out substrate imperfections such as nail heads or knots. Our underlay additionally protects the lead sheet from condensation and corrosive attack, is free of any substance that can degrade lead and is not adversely affected by in-situ welding.

Wood Core Roll

Used for jointing bays of lead roofing, also on steeply pitched roofs and lead cladding where bold joint appearance is preferred allowing for the expansion and contraction in lead sheet and lead flashing.

The wood rolls are treated and shaped as shown.  The undercut to the base of the roll is designed to prevent wind lift.

Copper Nails

Only large-headed copper nails or stainless steel nails conforming to BS1020-1&2 should be used to fix lead. Their shanks should be annular ring, helical ring or serrated and not less than 20mm long. Shank diameter for light duty use should be at least 2.65mm and for heavy duty at least 3.35mm.

  • Available in 25 & 30mm length (1 kg per bag).

Lead Fixing Clips / Strips

Lead fixing Clips will hold lead permanently in position. Cut to the required length fixing clips are recommended in rolls, welts, standing seams and for the clipping of lap joints and flashings.

Lead fixing clips should not be less than 50mm wide; they should be turned over at the edge of the lead by at least 25mm except where they are tucked into welted edges. Continuous clips should not be less than 75mm wide.

  • Available in copper and stainless steel.
  • Fixing strip available in 20m x 50mm wide.
  • Fixing clips available in packs of 25 – 600mmx 50mm.
  • Usage – Clips at 300 to 500mm centres depending on exposures for flashings.

Lead Sealant

Our lead sealant is designed for pointing joints between lead and brickwork or other masonry. It is a one-part, neutral-cure, high performance, silicon-based product specifically formulated for use with lead sheet and flashings. In addition to its durability, the flexible joint it forms can easily accommodate temperature changes. It is a much more efficient solution than pointing with wet mortar, particularly in extremes of temperature, and is recommended by the Lead Sheet Association.

Patination Oil

Specifically developed for the industry by Calder on behalf of the Lead Sheet Association. Patination oil minimises unsightly staining and imparts a pleasing appearance to newly applied lead sheet and flashings.

Occasionally the patina formed on lead looks patchy and unattractive. In rainy or damp conditions new lead will quickly develop an uneven powdery white, non-adherent coating of lead carbonate, a corrosion product, which is aesthetically unacceptable. The staining of tiles and brickwork spoils the overall appearance of the building,

Patination Oil will minimise this uncontrolled formation of carbonate, improve the hygiene of the job AND impart a pleasing appearance to the lead both ‘before’ and ‘after’ the formation of its final patination.

We manufacture a broad range of lead products for the defence industry including lead bricks, lead pots, lead ballast, lead wool and bespoke lead shielding.

Nuclear powered naval vessels need effective radiation shielding that both protects the crew and takes up the least amount of valuable space. Since the late 1950’s nuclear reactors have powered naval vessels, primarily submarines. Close confines and extended submerged periods mean that submariners rely on high performance shielding to protect their health and the safety of the boat. Our production facility comprises of two 60 tonne melting pots and an 18 tonne/hour rolling mill which allows us to create bespoke lead products in a range of shapes and designs, from lead sheets, lead pipe shielding and decorative lead fixings.
